Steps Foundation

Our Mission:

"To aid those struggling with alcoholism and addiction by deepening their understanding of the twelve steps to recovery."

About Us:

A brother and sister, a businessman and a lawyer, who both had been granted a new lease on life through the process of 12 step recovery, began the Steps Foundation in 2002. Following the steps’ instruction to carry the message to others, they created the foundation with its mission "To aid those struggling with alcoholism and addiction by deepening their understanding of the twelve steps to recovery."

The foundation works to make available the experience, strength and hope of those who have recovered from addiction through the application of the twelve steps. The founders’ experience with recovery has been through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous but the founders believe, and most doctors and specialists agree, that most, if not all, addictions have the same physical, psychological and spiritual roots. The Steps Foundation seeks to help all who are struggling with addiction to a substance or behavior. In doing so the foundation incorporates material gathered from many differently titled twelve step programs.

The Steps Foundation uses all available media - pamphlets, books, tapes, videos, and the internet to spread knowledge of the basic principles of recovery. People who are in recovery explain what life was like for them, how they changed, exactly what they did to bring about those changes, and what life is like for them now. We believe that this information will help those beginning the process of recovery, those who are faltering in their own attempts at recovery, people who are curious about 12 step recovery and those on solid recovery ground who want to broaden and reinforce the base of recovery on which they have rebuilt their lives.

Practically, the foundation devotes about 70% of its time to the production of educational materials. By “production” we mean writing, filming, animation, photography, programming and other activities directly involved with the creation of educational materials. One of the primary “products” produced and maintained will be a website designed to spread knowledge of 12 step recovery in accord with the foundation’s mission. A series of videos entitled “The Steps: Exactly How They Work” is currently in production.

The foundation devotes about 20% of its time to the creative process of developing and designing educational materials. Employees or volunteers will do some of this creative activity in house; some of this activity will involve evaluating concepts and ideas submitted to the foundation by outside agencies.

Finally, the foundation devotes about 10% of its time to administration and promoting its educational materials to those individuals and organizations that can most benefit from them.

The Steps Foundation, as a charitable operating foundation, seeks funding through tax deductible donations from the public and project oriented grants from other charitable and government agencies.
