Step Three

We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.

Question 1: Why on earth am I supposed to turn my “will” and my “life” over to the care of “God”? Is this some kind of cult thing or what?
Answers:

You don’t have to do anything. The steps are suggestions, they are the steps that the first 100 AA’s and millions after them took to beat their alcoholism. It’s entirely up to you if you want to follow our example or not. Turning my will and my life over to the care of God was the best decision I ever made.

When I told my sponsor I was having a hard time with the concept of “God” and really couldn’t conceive of turning my will and my life over to this thing I didn’t actually believe in, he told me to relax. Remember, your Higher Power can be whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be the “God” people talk about in church. At the beginning, my higher power was the AA group. “God” was a “Group Of Drunks”. So I turned my will and my life over to the care of the group because I absolutely knew from experience that I couldn’t make it on my own.
